Playstation Is Ending Physical Games In 2028
By ImJustThatKinky • 1 week ago

We all bought physical games in the past, and hell, might still be buying physical games till this day. I know I’ve stopped buying physical for awhile now, and only really purchased them for games I really, really enjoy. More so as a collection thing. But, Sony and Playstation are thinking of removing physical games as a choice all together in 2028.

Now does this affect me? Not really, since like I stated, I’ve been off of physical games for awhile now. Digital games are just more convenient. Like, not needing to get up and switch out a disk is a GAME changer. And I start losing more and more space to keep all those games in my room. I also don’t really want to wait for Amazon to ship my game, or drive to the store to get it. It’s a quick and easy transaction when it comes to digital games.

But a good chunk of people aren't really happy about the switch to digital only. With many physical owners taking a stand.

Now, let’s talk about it. Do I hate that physical games are supposedly disappearing? Yes. Do I wish people who enjoy physical games had the opinion to buy them if they wanted to? Yes. But, do I feel like some of these people who are crying about this situation are being performative? Absolutely.

First of all, a 7 day boycott isn’t going to change shit. If you really want to show change, just don’t play Playstation what so ever. Normal people might not play their Playstation for 7 days, that’s nothing new, and won’t affect their bottom line. Real movements have to also affect you. So that is the first performative thing about this whole issue.

Also, I feel like the majority of people already mostly buy digital games. I do understand wanting the choice, but I feel like most of these people have already eliminated the choice from their minds. A lot of people praise buying games on Steam, a fully digital platform. So what’s the difference between that and Playstation. If Steam shut downs now, you would lose your Steam library as well. It’s going to be the same issue.

Now, I do still want physical games to be a thing for the people who enjoy them. So I have two ideas. One, they could make limited copies, like 100,000 physical copies of the game, and the first 100,000 to buy them, get the copies, and people who weren’t able get the physical copy, would have to buy it digitally. Or, the second option, when pre-orders are open, if you pre-order the game, they can make physical copies for everyone who pre-order them. And once pre-orders are up, they’d send all the physical copies that were pre-ordered and everyone else will have to buy the game digitally. It might not be a perfect system, but it’s a better system than complaining and not trying to come up with a solution.

This issue can easily be tracked back to the rise of AI and tariffs. Gaming and gaming production is rising in cost because of these changes, and is now affecting the consumers. For years gaming wasn’t being shifted to such an extreme. But with a lot of dumb government decisions, us gamers are having to suffer for it.

What do you think of this decision by Playstation? Do you still buy physical games? Are you joining the boycott? Tell us in the comments.
