It’s the shortest month of the year. That’s right, it’s Black History Month! And I’m here to talk about my top 5 favorite black characters in anime.
Simon from Durarara
The big lovable black Russian that everyone loves. Simon is just that gentle giant that whenever you see him, you can’t help but smile. He has a warm, protective aura about him that makes you feel comfortable and safe despite his size and unusual skin color based on Japanese standards. He was a lovely addition to the Durarara cast.
Cain from Banana Fish
Now one of the more recent black character to show up in anime is Cain. I man who was presented to be racist against white people at first, before Ash showed up. Cain had Ash’s back through it all, he grew into a character I didn’t expect. I didn’t think Cain would be that important to the plot, but he became a big part in helping Ash’s complete his journey. And I’m happy with how he wasn’t just another throwaway character in the end.
Hiyama from Shokugeki no Soma
Now this is when we get into the claiming territory. Hiyama isn’t black in the way of African American, but he is black in the sense of skin tone, so we claim him. He also made history. Being the first ever black man to beat Soma in a cooking match. He’s a very enjoyable character to watch as he helps Soma grow into a better chef. He was the first true obstacle standing in Soma’s way
Piccolo from Dragon Ball
Of course Piccolo is black. From the voice, the racism he has to suffer from people (like Deku), and the white durag that he wears. We claim him! First starting off as a villain to become one of Goku’s best friends, Piccolo is a very wonderful and deep character, who grew plenty throughout the run of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. He even help raise Gohan, when his deadbeat dad couldn’t. And you know during that time Chichi had a little fun with Piccolo, why do you think Goku and Chichi never kissed? Once you go Namek, you never go back.
Yoruichi from Bleach
The girl who breaks through the race barrier. No matter if you’re a racist white man, you can’t help but want a taste of that chocolate. Yoruichi was maybe the first anime girl to give me that weird tingly feeling that my young body didn’t understand. That hot spring scene when she turned from her cat form into her human form blew my mind. It something to be proud of when one of people's favorite girl in Bleach is a dark skinned black girl.
