Say 'Ni Hao' to Corona-Chan!
By Yung Namahage • 4 years ago

Man, 2020 has gotten off to a pretty rocky start. World War 3 is closer than ever, Australia's still burning and, to top it off, we're in the middle of another disease epidemic. OK, disease epidemics come and go all the time. Remember when everyone was terrified of Ebola a couple years back? More importantly, remember when people were making cute fanart and lewds of a virus that makes you bleed from every hole?

Unlike the strain of Ebola that started the 2018 epidemic in Kivu, the strain of coronavirus that's been making the headlines lately has never been seen before it was found in Wuhan, China last month. Existing vaccines don't work and no treatments have been found yet. So far, there have been over 6,000 confirmed cases and 130 deaths, and it's already spread from China to other countries in Asia, Europe, America and even as far as Australia. But in the same vein (see what I did?) as Ebola-chan, at least it's inspired some pretty sweet art in the form of Corona-chan.

The first example of Corona-chan gijinka art I could find was this one, originally uploaded to pixiv on January 23. Like the disease itself, Corona-chan has been spreading at a rapid pace. Each artist has put their own spin on her, with common elements including Chinese dresses, the shape of the virion itself, the beer the disease shares a name with and bat wings, since the virus is believed to have come from eating ill-prepared bats.

Bonus points if you get the references in that last one. Anyway, that concludes my latest report on the strange world of Rule 34. What do you guys think of Corona-chan? Which version is your favorite? Do you think it's OK to lewd a deadly disease that's currently put thousands of people in danger? Stay safe, and as always let us know below!
