"Fuck you, Gimme $15" - Blizzard Inc.
By WakeUpSnooze • 10 months ago

Even as someone who still occasionally plays Overwatch 2, I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw the most recent development in this ongoing perpetual disappointment for the playerbase. In case you missed it, I did an article covering the basic situation and the extreme backlash that emerged after Blizzard announced the cancellation of their long awaited PvE mode that was the original justification for pushing towards Overwatch 2’s release in the first damn place. At least, that was the justification on paper given to fans. It has become clear now with the eradication of that promised skill-tree focused campaign that the corporate overlords are interested in one thing and one thing only: more money. And this culminated in the most hilariously tone deaf announcement I’ve seen yet from Blizzard. That’s saying something.

My dear friends, for the small price of $15, you too can get excited to play some upcoming PvE content in Overwatch 2. That’s right my friends, rejoice! Okay maybe it won’t have the in-depth skill tree system… and maybe it’ll be a few missions and not an entire campaign… and maybe this indicates to play the full story you’ll need to continuously pay $15 for each upcoming installment… but fuck it you trust Papa Blizzard don’t you? When have they ever fucked up? Let me step off my high horse for a second. In another world, from another company, for another game, with a different community, this idea might not be so bad. I mean $15 is still less than ¼ of the price of a modern AAA game. Let’s say you make a 10 hour long campaign that’s fun and replayable. Do that four times to tell a story thus creating a 40 hour base campaign for $60. Assuming that’s fun enough to go back through multiple times with friends, that’s a completely fine price system in my eyes. But you have to understand the context of this specific ordeal. The Overwatch community ALREADY feels completely ignored, beaten, scammed, and belittled by Blizzard’s recent decisions. For them to renege on their initial promise, only to instead deliver a watered down version of said promise, for $15 an update, is the worst kind of timing and PR move I’ve seen in a while. I wasn’t exaggerating earlier where I couldn’t help but laugh out loud when I saw THIS was their next move.

Here we see an artistic depiction of the average OW2 fan, as D. Va.

I can’t imagine this story developing any further into the pits of hell, but Blizzard hasn’t been afraid to push boundaries in recent years. I don’t know anyone who still respects them as a company. Are you following the Overwatch 2 backlash? Is this the most tone deaf move by the company since the mobile phones insult? Is there any hope for Blizzard to win back players' trust? Choose your hero, look at the price of the PvE missions, and probably just play PvP for free anyway in the comments below!
