Maybe One Season Is Enough Sometimes
By WakeUpSnooze • 1 year ago

Humans are often a greedy race. When we get something we enjoy, we want more of that good shit. Pile it on, baby. But unfortunately too much of anything can quickly become a negative experience. Right now two shows have perfectly embodied that sentiment into my soul, and that would be last season’s Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out and this season’s Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro. Both are anime that I enjoyed the first time around and kept up with the fact they got another installment on the way after finishing their previous air runs. However I found myself questioning if they really needed a second season back then, and so far as I sit here in the present, I’m pretty sad to say I don’t think so.

Some anime have amazing plotlines with a large cast of characters ripe for fleshing out. All too often we never see a second season and the fans are left pretty disappointed with a mediocre ending (since it’s just something the studio comes up with to tell people “hey read that manga baby”). But I don’t think that’s the case for many comedy shows. In comedy, the main point is to make you laugh, so a lot of writers don’t bother with much character building, plot development, foreshadowing… you know the non-comedic stuff. Therefore I think these kinds of anime run their course pretty quick after twelve episodes. Uzaki has big boobs and annoys senpai. In season two, she continues to do this. Nagatoro teases and makes fun of the MC. Only one episode was out at the time of writing, but so far it was twenty more minutes of the exact same style of setups and punchlines. When there’s basically no tangible difference between season one and two, I have to really question if I have the time and patience to sit down and watch more of essentially the same shit that I’ve already seen. Some comedies manage to break out of this trend, like Love is War, as each season tends to add new characters (that are actually memorable and add to the variety of jokes and interactions) as well as actually develop the main cast.

Listen I love y'all, but if we ain't fucking I'm gonna have to head out.

I guess what I’m trying to say is these comedy ecchi often only provide enough comedy and enough ecchi for one season, and it always surprises me when they get renewed without much hassle for a second go round. Without progression, it feels like beating a dead horse. Let’s upgrade this production to a hentai or bring in some talented comedians to write the jokes cause right now the horse is not responding to CPR. At the moment I still plan to keep up with Nagatoro, but it’s mostly for article ideas and to be in the anime meme know-how more than anything else. Are you watching any of the anime mentioned? Do you think some shows are fine stopping after one season? If so, what genre are they? Write two static characters, have them say the same lines over and over again, and repeat it all for season two in the comments below!
