Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Heavily Censored In Chinese Release
By WakeUpSnooze • 2 years ago

This certainly isn't the type of news to get everyone in the holiday spirit this week. Sorry folks. Don’t shoot the messenger but I’m here today to once again question China’s insistence on removing all things even remotely sexual from media content. In today’s story we focus on Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. The anime is known for being a bit lewd and risque here and there, but the heartwarming messages and character interactions adequately distinguish it from a typical “smooth brain hard dick” type of anime. Many jokes, visual or otherwise, are made involving some characters’ boobs or lack thereof, which means the censoring basically forces several scenes to lose some meaning. I’m not big on watching the Chinese version of anime so I’m not sure if they made proper adjustments to account for these changes or if the show simply makes less sense overall now. Ilulu was probably hit the hardest as her enormous chest was cut down to size. This could be confusing as from my understanding she stored her draconic energy in her boobs and thus they were big because she was powerful. Additionally, she has multiple scenes where a male coworker ends up in hijinks due to her enormous chest. Point is I have no idea if they went back and changed any of the aspects surrounding her chest or not, and she was the hardest hit character. Meaning other characters had their boobs reduced or covered up entirely as well.

At the end of the day I just don’t understand the push to desexualize content in China, or really any country for that matter. Sure maybe don’t let guys wear speedos and girls wear bikinis on Elmo’s World, but for Kobayashi, a comedy for pretty much teens and adults? I don’t understand the big deal. Then again, I’m sitting here questioning why the CCP takes certain actions which is already a rabbit hole that would drain my sanity. Then again who am I kidding, it’s not like America doesn’t do its own fair share of censoring. There are still some areas where sexual censoring is applauded and encouraged. Again I’m open to the idea that when kids or the general public are involved, they shouldn’t be exposed to that type of content. However, this case seems completely unnecessary.

I don’t know what else to say. It’s another depressing win for unfounded censorship to add to the list. Best thing I can do is be happy I saw the original Japanese release way back when. Shit get me off this article before I get any sadder. Are you keeping up with Kobayashi? Was this censorship appropriate or way over the line? Will this practice continue for years to come in China and elsewhere? Breathe fire, fly in the sky, and be home by night to be a maid in the comments below!
