Netflix Announces New Devil May Cry Series
By Yung Namahage • 5 years ago

A few weeks ago, Netflix launched the second season of their Castlevania animated series, which has generally been pretty well-received. While it isn't quite anime as it's created by a Western studio, it borrows heavily from the stylistic elements of Japanese animation, and is based on a Japanese game series. Following its unprecedented success, developer Adi Shankar announced his intention to shift from vampire slaying to demon hunting.

In an interview with IGN, Shankar announced that he "acquired [the Devil May Cry] rights myself so the jabronis in Hollywood can't f*** this one up too." He also tweeted a photo of himself cosplaying as series lead Dante, hinting that he's a fan of the series. If that's the case, the we should probably rest assured that the series is in the good hands of a fan instead of being given the usual soulless, corporate adaptation. If its anything like Castlevania, DMC will finally be given the adaptation it deserves.

This won't be the first Devil May Cry series. Madhouse created an anime that ran for one series in 2007, which might not have been excellent but provided a few characters and plot elements that were referenced in the games, specifically the upcoming Devil May Cry V, set to launch next year.

Most interestingly, Shankar stated that Devil May Cry "will join Castlevania in what we’re now calling the bootleg multiverse.” Will there be a crossover at some point? Will Dante and Trevor team up against hordes of demons and vampires? Either way, any plot details or a release date are yet to be seen, but personally I'm looking forward to this.
