Yoruichi Isn't WHITE Any More?!
By ImJustThatKinky • 6 months ago

That’s right, Yoruichi is finally back to her roots, and now is being voiced by a black voice actress

And it’s being met with praise and also disdain. Which isn't surprising when a big change like this happens. Hell, even the English voice actor for Hawk from My Hero Academia is throwing his hat into the ring, or, just throwing hands.

Hawk ain't fucking around.

Now if people are just being racist about the whole situation and hating the VA for that, then yeah, I have a problem with those kinds of comments. But if it’s just long-time Bleach fans who have a problem with the sudden change, then I can agree with the displeasure. Wendee Lee has been voicing Yoruichi since the beginning, from the anime to all the Bleach games. Her being the voice of Yoruichi has history to it. It’s not like she voices her for just one season and then the change happened. The woman has been voicing Yoruichi since 2006.

This will always be my Yoruchi.

Also, Weedee Lee is in the new season of Bleach, just as minor characters, so they did have the ability to recast her as Yoruichi. And for people who want to get technique, we all know Yoruichi isn’t black, so trying to force representation on her at this point in time is kind of silly anyways. Hell, I’m black and I do claim her to be one of the sisters, but technique, she’s not. Also, it always shows that people and VAs actually don’t care about representation, like, Yoruchi new VA also voice Hiyori. And Hiyori is the farthest thing from being black. Bitch looks more white if anything.

This girl doesn't look black to me?!

So you either care about representation or not. You can’t have both and fight for both. Representation in anime is a really muddy topic which I can see that we obviously haven’t learned how to handle yet. Just enjoy your anime at this point.

What do you think of Yoruichi's new VA? Will you miss Weedee Lee as Yoruichi? Do you think the change was unnecessary? Tell us in the comments
