Act-Age Author Tatsuya Matsuki Given Suspended Sentence
By Yung Namahage • 3 years ago

Just before the arrival of the new year, former writer and creator of Act-Age Tatsuya Matsuki appeared before the Tokyo District Court for his sentencing, four months after his sexual harassment of a junior high school girl.

Matsuki was sentenced to 18 months in prison, as decided upon by the prosecution during his initial appearance in court. However, his lawyer's request was heeded, meaning he'll have a suspended sentence. As long as Matsuki remains on good behavior for the next three years, he won't see the inside of a jail cell.

For what it's worth Matsuki has expressed remorse for his actions, but his crime isn't an easy one to forgive or forget. It's extremely unlikey he'll go back to working in the manga industry after he was responsible for the cancellation of Act-Age, upsetting fans everywhere as well as the staff who also worked on the popular Shonen Jump series and its planned stage play.

If you were a fan of his former series and you're still disappointed that Act-Age came to a premature end then maybe reading Engan no Cyclops will help you get over it. Published in an issue of Shonen Jump last month, it's a lawyer suspense one-shot written by Dragon Ball Super animation director Osamu Ishikawa and drawn by none other than Shiro Usazaki, who used to be responsible for the art in Act-Age before Matsuki fucked everything up. I admit I've never read Act-Age but I will say Usazaki's sleek art style is pretty cool, and I'm glad for her and her fans that she managed to find a new outlet for it.

Now you can enjoy Usazaki's art without assosciating it with a sex pest!

Hopefully this is the end of Matsuki's saga and all that's left for him now is to fade into obscurity. What do you guys think? Was a suspended sentence the right choice? If he wrote a new series, would you check it out knowing what he did? Or would you rather enjoy Engan no Cyclops safe in the knowledge that it wasn't written by a pervert? You know what to do in those comments!
